Over the past year we have seen a rapid increase in ai imagery and as a handmade verified platform it is muddying the water of the artistry in creations. Over the coming months, we will be phasing out the use of generative AI imagery across Madeit.

What is generative AI imagery?
Generative AI imagery is any image created by an AI tool rather than being photographed, drawn, painted, or designed by a person.
This includes AI-generated:
- People
- Animals (including dogs and pets)
- Hands
- Product photos
- Backgrounds
- Scenes
- Illustrations
- Artwork
If an AI tool created the image, or a significant part of the image, it is considered generative AI imagery. Here are some examples of ai generated images.
What AI is acceptable for imagery?
Using AI assisted platforms such as Canva can be used to edit imagery in the following areas;
- Brightening images
- Colour correcting
- Cropping images
Why is Madeit phasing out generative AI imagery?
Generative ai imagery is flooding platforms such as Temu, Shein, Etsy, Amazon.
Madeit exists to celebrate Australian handmade and the people behind the work.
Our community values authenticity, creativity, craftsmanship, and the stories of real makers. These changes help ensure that what customers see reflects the genuine work of the artisan behind the product.
Key Dates
From 8 July 2026
👉🏽 Generative AI images of people or animals are no longer permitted in the Madeit Facebook Group.
👉🏽 New Members applying to sell on Madeit will not be allowed to use generative ai imagery within product listings.
👉🏽 Any products using generative ai imagery as their main product image will not be used in Madeit marketing or promotions.
From 21st August 2026
Generative AI imagery cannot be used as the main image for:
- Product listings
- Profile images
- Marketing promotions in the Madeit Facebook Group.
AI-generated images may still be used in secondary positions during this transition period but must be clearly labelled.
From 1 October 2026
Generative AI imagery will no longer be permitted on Madeit.

Compliance
Images that do not comply with this policy will be removed (unapproved). Where non-compliant imagery is used in a product listing, the product may be temporarily removed from sale until compliant images have been provided. Once the imagery has been updated to meet this policy, the product can be reinstated.
Labelling Requirement
Until 1 October 2026, any image containing generative AI imagery must be clearly labelled as AI-generated. This helps maintain transparency and allows customers to understand what they are viewing. See this example for how to label an Ai generated image.
